Head of School Blog - Week 9
It's great to be back at the Academy after a well-earned rest for students and staff.
We have lots of events planned for this half term starting with our Year 7 Welcome Service on Wednesday 13th November at 6.30pm. We look forward to welcoming parents and carers to this very special evening. If you have not already done so, please confirm your attendance by returning your reply slip to the Year 7 pastoral office.
Due to the change in seasons and the onset of dark nights I would like to remind you of our adverse weather procedure. The academy will remain open unless absolutely necessary to close it. If the weather is too bad for the academy to open, a notice will be put on the academy website (www.hopeacademy.org.uk) and the Hope Twitter account (https://twitter.com/Hope_Academy). A recorded message will be left on the academy’s telephone system and you will also receive a text message. Wire FM and Wish FM will be notified and will put out regular bulletins.
In the event that the academy needs to close during the course of the school day, you will be informed by text and by e-mail. PLEASE DO NOT TELEPHONE THE ACADEMY UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Your child will be kept safe in school until you are able to collect them. If snow settles on the ground, a route will be cleared from the road to the main entrance.
With the change in weather in mind, please ensure your child is suitably dressed for winter when travelling to school. Unless it is raining our students are encouraged to be outside during break and lunchtime.
This is also an opportune time to discuss safety with your children now that evenings are getting darker. Please remind them to:
- Encourage your child to return home before it gets dark
- Advise them to try and stay in well-lit areas, stay on main routes and avoid dark short cuts
- Make sure they advise you where they are going and what time they will return and to keep their mobile phones charged and with them
- Encourage your child to stay in groups rather than walking on their own
- They should inform you or a member of staff straight away if they see anything that makes them feel uncomfortable
May I take this opportunity to remind you that uniform items are grey tights or white socks for girls; black tights or grey socks are not permitted. Uniform items can be purchased from our Uniform Shop; we have winter PE tops available priced at £18.00. Your sons/daughters are also permitted to wear sports skins underneath their Academy PE top during PE lessons. Thank you for helping keep our students smart!
We welcomed senior leaders from Archdiocese schools to the Academy this week as we launched Century Tech. Century Tech uses learning science, artificial intelligence and neuroscience to analyse how individual students learn best; it constantly adapts to provide support and challenges. Year 10 students have been trained to use this powerful software and are currently using it to support their learning in science and English. This exciting new resource will be extended to other subject areas and year groups during this academic year.
During the holidays we have been reviewing, updating and adding information to our website. We have added a new section in the curriculum area called subjects; you will find curriculum information for each subject and year group here /216/subjects. We are also working hard creating a section on Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) which we will launch this half term.
In my last blog I asked for your support in completing a parent voice survey; I would like to thank all the parents and carers who were able to take the time to complete the survey. Your comments and feedback will form part of our ongoing commitment to deliver the best possible opportunities for our students and ensure that we achieve our vision to be ‘outstanding in all we do’. I look forward to sharing the positive results with you in next week’s blog.
We will be holding our annual Christmas Markets on Monday 9th December from 6.00pm. This event is always very popular with staff, students, parents and the local community. If you would like to run a stall, please email HopeChristmasMarket@sthelens.org.uk.
Finally, I would like to share the following government link to parent guides relating to relationships, sex and health education which have been published by GOV.UK. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/812594/RSE_secondary_schools_guide_for_parents.pdf
