D.E.A.R

This page has deliberately started with ‘dear’ in capital letters to bring your attention to an exciting new reading programme at Hope Academy called D.E.A.R – Drop Everything And Read.

D.E.A.R is a silent reading programme that will take place twice a week, every week, during lessons when all students and staff will stop what they are doing in order to read a book for 20 minutes.

Research has shown that reading for pleasure plays a crucial role in helping to develop vocabulary, spelling, grammar and a range of reading skills and that strong literacy skills can lead to better life outcomes for young people. It is therefore our mission to strongly encourage students to read for pleasure in order to develop these skills.

Students will need to ensure that a reading book becomes an essential and compulsory part of their daily equipment as it is possible that they will require their book every day. We will require parents to support us in ensuring that students bring a book to the Academy daily. Their book can be from home or the school library and newly ordered texts for all age ranges, interests and abilities are now available.

Please note that students are not permitted to use electronic devices, for example, iPads, Kindles etc.
