Head of School Blog - Week 9

It’s been an extremely busy week for students, staff and parents this week with a number of events and meetings designed to support our community of learners and their parents/carers.

YEAR 11 PREPARING TO PERFORM EVENT 1

Parents and students were invited to attend a virtual curriculum event on Wednesday. Before the live Q&A sessions they were asked to watch subject presentations which shared important information to help preparation for the mock examinations in December and also the 2021 GCSE summer series of exams.  Parental feedback was incredibly positive and recordings of subject sessions have been added to the website along with the presentation by Mrs Adams and Miss Houghton.  Subject information from the event is still available on our website.  Please e-mail hope.parent@sthelens.org.uk if you need a reminder of the username and password to access the section. YEAR GROUP PARENT MEETINGS

Microsoft was an essential member of the Hope family on Wednesday as its TEAMs platform enabled us to host not only our Preparing to Perform event for year 11 but also year group parent meetings for years 8, 9 and 10.  The meetings were well attended and allowed parents the opportunity not only to gather lots of useful information form their respective Head of Year but also interact using the Chat facility.  Once again, parental feedback was extremely complimentary.  Recordings of each meeting can be accessed via our website.

COVID-19

We have had a number of positive cases confirmed this week and a letter to advise parents and staff was circulated on Tuesday. Click HERE for letter.

TEMPEST PHOTOGRAPHY

Tempest will be visiting the academy on Tuesday 24th November to take individual photographs of our year 7 and 11 students.  Further information to follow.

NEWTON COMMUNITY CENTRE AND N.E.C.G’s TOY APPEAL

We have been asked to help with the Toy Appeal for Newton-le-Willows community centre. As you are aware, there will be a number of families struggling to make Christmas happen this year. They are collecting new children’s toys (not second hand), and Christmas /foodbank food to give to families who need it.  If anyone has anything they are able to donate, please bring it to the chapel. We will be collecting until the end of November, then the Community Centre will collect it from us.

HOPE SIXTH FORM CENTRE VIRTUAL OPEN EVENT

On Tuesday 6th January the Sixth Form Centre will be hosting an open event for students and their parents/carers to find out more about what they will be offering in September 2021.

This will include information about a T level transition course aimed at preparing students to enter T Level courses in 2022 (Business, Digital, Engineering & Health). The transition course will consist of employability/work skills, digital skills, work experience and functional maths/English alongside bespoke subject knowledge related to each students chosen T level route.  Also on offer is Hope Academy Sports where students will study a BTEC extended diploma programme (equivalent 3 A levels) with the opportunity to progress to university, higher apprenticeship or employment. As part of the course students will gain coaching qualifications and a fitness instructor’s course.  Look out for further details in the coming weeks and don’t miss the opportunity to meet the teacher who will be available to answer any questions you or your son/daughter may have.

ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Unfortunately, we have received a report of antisocial behaviour involving a small minority of our students in the local community.  This type of behaviour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.  Senior staff will investigate and deal with any reports from local residents and sanctions will be issued accordingly.  We are very proud of our academy and students are aware of their responsibilities not only inside the building but also in the local community.  Your support with issues of this type is greatly appreciated.

CARMEL COLLEGE

Carmel are seeing a record number of applications this year, and have already interviewed over 500 students for September 2021 entry.  If your son/daughter is considering applying for Carmel College there is another opportunity to engage with the live Principal’s Presentations and Q&A this Saturday 14th November at 11.30am and 1.00pm.  Further information can be found on the college website.

Kasia’s Reflection

This week we remembered people who have served and sacrificed for and alongside the UK. Their sacrifice reminded us that wherever there is fighting, there is always human cost, both for the people fighting and the people living in the countries involved.

Every year the nation unites in commemorating Remembrance Sunday and 11/11. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and in light of the risks posed, many events did not happen in the way they were first planned.

Despite the changes this year, we still made sure that pupils and staff paid their respects by allowing all those who are in uniformed organisations, like the cadets, scouts and guides, to come in on the 11th in their uniforms, and we held a virtual reflection and 2 minute silence across the Academy at 11am.

Jesus told us that.  ‘There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ (John 13:15) For all of those people who have died for us or been injured for us, let us take a moment to reflect on their sacrifice and service, and to thank them.

God of peace, we pray for all those who have died in war -May they rest in peace.

We pray for all those who are fighting in conflicts around the world - May they achieve peace.

We pray for all those who suffer as a result of active service - May they find peace.

We pray for ordinary people caught up in conflict - May peace be with them.

We pray for those who grieve or wait for news - May they know Christ’s peace in their hearts.

We pray for those who strive for peace - May you bless their peace-making.

We offer these prayers in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Kind regards

Mrs Adams
